tier 1 consists of the top-4 teams. 1st place is automatically seeded in the tier 1 qualifier, i.e. a two week vacation. 2nd place gets a bye the first week. 3rd and 4th place play the first week and the winner advances to play the 2nd place team the second week. the winner of that moves on to qualifier as well.

tier 2 simply consists of the next 4 teams though off the top of my head i cannot recall if the setup is the same (i.e., whether 5th place is seeded in the tier 2 qualifier or if there is a full playoff between 5th - 8th). i haven't had a 1st or 5th place team in while... ;)
